What's insideA free online piano, and everything around it
PianoLabs is a piano you play in your browser — with your mouse, your computer keyboard or a MIDI keyboard — and a whole piano-learning app built around it. Here is what the new version brings.
Play
- A free online piano. A sampled 88-key grand piano in the browser, played with the mouse, the computer keyboard or a MIDI keyboard, with sustain, soft and sostenuto pedals.
- Your own piano. Plug in a MIDI keyboard or digital piano, or let PianoLabs listen to an acoustic piano through the microphone.
- Play Along. Falling notes and engraved sheet music together, across 445 public-domain pieces or your own MIDI and MusicXML files — listen, learn note by note, or perform and be scored.
- Metronome. Tempo, meter, subdivisions and tap tempo.
Learn
- Learn to Play course. A step-by-step piano course from how to sit at the keys to songs, scales, chords and arpeggios in all twelve keys, with play-along lessons that listen as you play.
- Music theory library. Theory topics written out and worked through, from reading notes to harmony.
- Intervals & Chords. A twelve-module course on how intervals stack into chords and chords into keys.
- Modes and songwriting. The seven modes as a lesson you can hear, and a chord chart for songwriters that grows a row at a time.
- Quizzes. 280 quizzes across fourteen topics, from note names and rhythm to intervals, key signatures, cadences and form.
Practice
- Fourteen practice exercises. Note recognition, interval training, sight-reading, melodic dictation, play by ear, rhythm, chord switching, chord progressions, scales, arpeggios, theory flashcards and more.
- Hanon and Schmitt. The classic finger exercises, checked note for note against the printed editions, with a speed builder.
- Today's Practice. A daily plan picked by spaced repetition from what you are weakest at, and custom routines you build yourself.
Explore harmony
- Chord, scale and arpeggio libraries. More than a thousand chords, scales from the major to the exotic, and arpeggios fingered over one to three octaves — in every key, playable on the keyboard.
- Circle of fifths. Keys, key signatures and the chords of each key, playable, in major and all three minors.
- Harmony tools. Key Explorer, Tonal Harmony, Voice Leading, the Harmonic Family Tree and chord superimposition.
Create
- Music generators. Chord progressions, melodies, basslines, hooks and full accompaniments in any key and a hundred styles.
- Beat maker and song structure. A drum sequencer with real grooves, and a song-form builder.
- Sheet music editor. Write notation, import MIDI and MusicXML, record your playing and turn it into a score.
- Audio Lab. Import any recording, slow it down without changing the pitch, transpose it, take the vocals out, and read its chords, key and tempo.
Games and progress
- The arcade. Six games that train your ear, your reading and your theory: Chord Invaders, Sight Flight, Melody Siege, Cosmic Quickdraw, Rhythm Runner and Ear Arena.
- Streaks, XP and ranks. A practice log, streaks, XP, ranks, achievements and a leaderboard.
- Community. Communities to join, and a marketplace of progressions, beats and routines to fork.
