The E melodic minor scale runs E F♯ G A B C♯ D♯ — the formula 1 2 ♭3 4 5 6 7, in steps of W H W W W W H (W a whole tone, H a semitone). Coming down it is spelled as the natural minor: E D C B A G F♯ E. The right hand plays it 1-2-3-1-2-3-4-5 and the left hand 5-4-3-2-1-3-2-1, over one octave.
